On the campus of North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park, there's a new facility that will help train and prepare students for careers in science and health care.
Envisioned since 2004, the new Bioscience and Health Careers Center opened its doors to students this week. The facility is located on the North Hennepin campus in Brooklyn Park along 85th Avenue.
The 65,000-square-foot facility addresses the increasing need for bioscientists, nurses and lab technicians and allows North Hennepin to expand its programming.
"It is an expansion of space," said Elaina Bleifield, North Hennepin's dean of science and math. "To have new equipment, new space, new opportunities to expand what we're already doing in the technology and the appropriate spaces."
The building features six science labs, two nursing labs, an undergraduate research lab and four simulation rooms that allow nursing students to get real world experience in a controlled environment with state-of-the-art technology.
By January, 250 nursing students will be using the facility in addition to students pursuing careers in medical lab technology and other medical and science related fields.
"It is going to fulfill a need for the workforce, to help provide workers that are better trained in some of the technology that is being used right now," said Bleifield. "We're working with our partners, business partners and our advisory boards to try and make sure we're meeting everybody's needs."
A grand opening for the new Bioscience and Health Careers Center will be held Sept. 23.
